What micronationalism is in essence
Does the news story below really indicate that the people of Long Island, that is ordinary citizens, taxpayers, and hard working people "have just had enough", as Dean Murray has stated?

No, not really!
Think about it. When was the last time people pulled the voting station lever and things actually changed? That never happened, even with Obama. Sure, I'm sure the guy that won the Long Island election is happy, and surely his life has changed, but what is he, or even a bunch of people like him that don't even exist, going to do?
Nothing.
I hope that intelligent readers have at least vaguely noticed that thinking about Independent Long Island is some radical, impractical idea, according to the mass media, but somehow the idea that you can actually change the system by simply pulling a lever, and handing all your power over to another guy to accomplish miracles is not an impractical idea! This is the same society, by the way, that hands over its kids' educations to teachers; that hands over parenting obligations to the TV set; that hands over its health to medical doctors; that hands over its ability to meet demanding monthly mortgage and other debt obligations, as well needed living expenses to unreliable income-generating entities called corporations, which in turn don't serve the interests of the people who need to work for a living (employees), but the interests of people who do not need to work for a living (employers and investors). This is the same society that generously hands over its livelihood to banks, credit card companies, and other economic predators besides the government, and without even thinking twice about it.
The solution in this kind of society is, somehow, always in someone else's hands, not your own, even when you are outside of the voting station. It is a society that encourages loyalty to everybody but the very people that matter the most in our lives. That, my friends, may be "reality", may be the "real world", or the life of most people in the communities of the Official World. If you really think about it, it is reality, but it is not truth. It is the way things are normally perceived, and how you are in fact encouraged daily to perceive, but it has nothing to do with the truth. And if it has nothing to do with the truth, it cannot set you free either. That society is not a true micronational community. In a micronational community, people are in charge of everything, including their own government! In fact, the very essence of micronationalism is self-sufficiency, autonomy, independence. Someone may have a little more authority in a micronation, and may often be asked to represent the interests of his community, but in a true micronational community most people are either completely in control of their lives, or yield overwhelming influence. This is the complete opposite of life in the Official World, where people yield all their power to others, and these others are not their parents, spouses, children, relatives, or even caring friends, but complete strangers.Micronationalists may each have a different definition of what micronationalism is, but in reality all true micronational communities have a common thread that is virtually the opposite of life in the Official World. Micronationalism is not about "reality", and in fact micronationalists are often treated like people fleeing reality. However, micronationalism is closer to truth, the kind that with a little luck, hard work, and goodwill towards others of similar mind, might just set you free.
